I think that five million is plenty of money for someone who will probably only play maybe ten games this season. Seriously, when was the last time he didn’t miss games in the regualar season due to injury. It is hard to feel bad for someone who makes five million, yet only plays 10 games because he’s always injured,

what,s managment waiting for.you need a wide receiver & a nosetackle, get moving.braylen edwards is available.so is cullen jenkins. there are good free agents,do something or else this season will be over quickly.the rest of the nfc west is active.what the hell is wrong with you people in san francisco.there,s also a good cornerback from the bengals.for god sakes get moving.

this is stupid.The 49ers were once a top franchise and now they are going to share a stadium with the raiders the other bay area team? I will loose all respect for my niners if this happens

I THINK ALEX SMITH SHOULD START BUT HE HAS A ROOKIE IN KAPERNICK WHO CAN EMERGE AS A ROOKIE OF THE YEAR QB HE HAS ALL THE TOOLS JUST NEED TO LEARN OFFENSE SO ITS KIND OF SHAKY FOR ALEX BUT I THINK KAPERNICK IS THE QB BETTER THAN ANY OTHER DRAFTED QB HIS STATS DO NOT LIE SO HE JUST BE A HALL OF FAMER IN THE FEATURE NAME ANY IN COLLEGE HISTORY WHO BETTER STATS SINCE THIS YEAR DRAFT

Alex Smith is the Niners best bet to making the playoffs. Eventhough they didnt make it this year, they are still the favored team in their division. Alex knows the offense really well and by going with another QB the niners are just pretty much starting all over again. I say give him a year under Harbaugh and watch him become a very good QB.

I have been a 49er fan for over sixty years. There is no college quarterback in the draft that is better than Alex Smith. Also, presently, there are no available NFL quarterbacks without a job that are better than Smith. The mistake that is being made by the 49er organization is that they are looking only at Smith’s intermittant play during the 2010 season (14 touchdowns in 10 games). The 49er organization should also look at the 2009 season when Smith threw for over 20 touchdowns, despite a bad defense without protection.

Even in the last season, Smith demonstrated that he can scramble when the situation requires (New Orleans game). Smith’s came within one play of either tying or beating Philadelphia in 2010.

The 49er organization cannot afford to make such a far-reaching decision based on what the majority of the fans think. It is evident that the changes in coaches over Smith’s six years, coupled with a sub-standard defense have not aided Smith’s career.

If Harbaugh wants to draft Luck next year, make the one-year offer to Smith sufficiently attractive, one that other teams cannot possibly match.

Alex Smith can develop and blossom under Harbaugh. With the improving offensive line (if healthy) and weapons available (Frank Gore, Vernon Davis and Crabtree,etc) this could be exciting. I hope they draft to shore up the defense (Miller or Peterson) and maybe pick up another running back who can bring other skills to the table (Rodgers from Oregon State would be great pick in the lower rounds). Another QB would be great also for future development but I think Harbaugh would love to have Andrew Luck next year (and it would cost draft picks to move up). The NFC West is wide open….(7 – 9 won the division) and the 49ers can be in the hunt with the right moves (this year and the future)
