The San Francisco 49′ers are going the extra mile this year to try to win the NFC West and return to the playoffs. In fact, they are going about 10,000 extra miles. The San Francisco 49ers are going to be traveling the most of any NFL team this season. When you include preseason and regular season, the frequent flier miles start to add up for the Niners. San Francisco will have logged 35,219 miles in travel by the time the regular season is over and done with. I’m sure the team wouldn’t mind a few thousand extra miles in January or February. Of course the Niners travel plans are skewed by their trip to London to play the Denver Broncos on Halloween.

The next closest team is the Seattle Seahawks at 25,192 miles. The team which can most likely rent a cab to get to games? The Cincinnati Bengals which only have to travel 6,688 miles. By the time the regular season is done for the Niners, they will have logged enough travel to fly around the globe one and a half times.

Unfortunately, the Niners were selected to play in the London game this year, which of course counts as a Niner’s home game. If the NFL wants to continue this ridiculous game in London, they should do it during the preseason, not while sticking season ticket holders with the cost of 8 games, while the team only plays 7 games.

The San Francisco 49ers started the afternoon earlier this afternoon, and in traditional head coach Mike Singletary fashion, they didn’t wait long to hand out the pink slips in order to get down to the 53 man mandated roster by 6pm EST on Saturday.

The 49ers have announced their entire listing of cuts this afternoon. In addition to what I already posted about CB Karl Paymah, RB Michael Robinson and WR Jason Hill, the 49er’s have released- LB Matt Wilhelm, K, Shane Andrus, LB Mike Balogun, OG Brian De La Puente, OT Matt Kopa, DE Derek Walker, QB Jarrett Brown, DT Will Tukuafu, WR Kevin Jurovich, LB Keaton Kristick, S Chris Maragos, WR Bobby Guillory, OC Cody Wallace, DL Khalif Mitchell, TE Tony Curtis, TE Joe Jon Finley, FB Jehuu Caulcrick and LB Bruce Davis.

It appears that it took very little time for Mike Singletary to determine who was ready to play for the 49ers and who wasn’t. So get prepared to go to battle with the remaining 53 and win the NFC West in 2010.

This preseason the San Francisco 49ers acquired free agent RB Brian Westbrook but they had already found gold in the draft when they selected RB Anthony Dixon. Anthony Dixon was the 173rd player chosen, selected in the 6th round out of Mississippi State. The 6’1″ 230 pound back have been impressive to say the least for the Niners this preseason. He’s recorded a 4 yard per carry average, 74 carries for 300 yards and scored 4 touchdowns.

Last night, Dixon carried 12 times for 80 yards, and 46 of those yards came on an impressive run where he took the ball to the left, then cut back to the right on the line and took it the distance, stiff arming a defender before crossing the endzone.

49er’s starting RB Frank Gore has a history of missing a couple of games a year with injuries, and the Niners won’t have to wonder if Brian Westbrook will be able to shoulder the load if Gore misses time now. Of course Westbrook comes with his own lengthy resume of injuries. Anthony Dixon should be able to fill in as needed for the Niners with his hard running style.

A very nice pick up indeed at number 173.

Given the events which came to a head yesterday between San Francisco 49ers WR Michael Crabtree and TE Vernon Davis, could you see a scenario which would prompt the San Francisco 49ers to trade Michael Crabtree to the San Diego Chargers for WR Vincent Jackson? I realize that head coach Mike Singletary told reporters this morning that everything was fine in the clubhouse and this situation with Michael Crabtree would not be a distraction, but you never know what happens behind closed doors. Not to mention NFL coaches and teams lie to the media.

So how would 49ers fans feel if that happened? Trading away a young player with a lot of upside but a crummy attitude that has yet to play in a pre-season game in his young career, for a talented veteran receiver who has already shown what he can do on the field.

Jackson is a huge target and a physical receiver at 6’5″ 230 pounds. Last season he had 68 receptions for nearly 1200 yards and 9 touchdowns. He will be suspended for the first three games of the season regardless of what happens by the Saturday deadline. If Jackson isn’t traded by the final 53 man roster cutdown deadline on Saturday, he will be suspended for the first 6 games of the 2010 season and his trade value plummets.

I doubt the 49ers would execute such a move but I know that Mike Singletary is not going to put up with much of Crabtree’s attitude, period. Jackson has made bad decisions off the field, with two DUI’s but in an interview on NFL Network, he vowed that drinking would never be an issue with him in the league again and he’s never been reported to have a detrimental locker room presence. Just something to think about, there are always last minute surprises in the NFL as teams adjust their rosters to get to the required 53 men.

Yesterday at practice, an on field spat occurred between San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis and WR Michael Crabtree. The players were escorted off the field by 49ers head coach Mike Singletary. Singletary told reporters after the incident “(Davis is) one of the captains. He did the right thing but he did it the wrong way”. Is this a problem for the San Francisco 49ers heading into what many think will be a season the Niners are poised for a return to the playoffs?

Michael Crabtree had a protracted holdout last season, not joining the team until week 7. He has missed an extended period of time this off-season and has failed to play in any pre-season games as he is dealing with a stiff neck. Perhaps the locker room is considering Crabtree now more of a pain in the neck.

Crabtree has been known for his diva-like behavior and now fans have to be wondering if he is going to cause more problems for the Niners during the course of the season. Crabtree appears to be believing all the hype surrounding his potential and has simply assumed the role of elite receiver and that behavior might be rubbing his team mates the wrong way.

I believe that Crabtree is poised for a huge year, but before you start acting like a top 5 receiver, perhaps you ought to get on the field and produce something first. I can guarantee you that Mike Singletary will not put up with this act for very long. Crabtree will either buy into what Singletary is selling or he will find himself watching from the sidelines. Singletary will not let one player think he is more important than the team as a whole.

All was well in the San Francisco 49er Nation, the Niners are 3-0 in pre season and now all of a sudden there seems to be an issue between two key players which figure to be important pieces to the Niners success in 2010. TE Vernon Davis and second year receiver Michael Crabtree got into a heated exchange of words, and the exchange was so forceful that Niner’s head coach Mike Singletary took both players off the practice field and into the lockerroom.

Both players declined comments to the media after the event, but coach Singletary told reporters after returning to the field after speaking with the players, “There is no more elephants in the room. The elephant was exposed.”

Well, there obviously seems to be some bad blood between these two players, both of whom have not seem the field during the pre season game the Niners have played this season.

San Francisco is poised to grab the NFC West title this year, there is no reason for all of this to be happening so close to the start of the regular season. The trio of Michael Crabtree, Vernon Davis and Frank Gore could propel the 49ers deep into the playoffs and something like this, doesn’t need to be happening now.

The San Francisco 49ers recorded their third win of the preseason, despite some poor play from their defense which allowed three Oakland Raiders touchdowns. 49ers RB Frank Gore showed he’s in mid-season form, and RB Anthony Dixon continues to solidify his spot on the Niners roster. But the undelying thought to take from last night game, was the ease of which the Raiders moved the ball on the Niners despite having the ball for only 51 plays and starting quarterback Jason Campbell not in the game. San Francisco head coach Mike Singletary said after the game, “We did not play very smart, and a little bit sloppy. Winning the game was nice, but it also was a reminder to our guys of all the work we still have to do”.

Niners WR Michael Crabtree was scheduled to see some action in Saturdays game but was a late scratch while he is still dealing with a stiff neck. Newly acquired RB Brian Westbrook played a few plays but left with a hamstring issue which the team is listing as a day to day issue.

Despite not seeing any carries in the preseason, RB Frank Gore showed he is ready for the regular season to begin. He ripped off a 49 yard run on his first carry and then followed it up with a 9 yard carry before leaving for the night. Anthony Dixon came on and carried the ball for the remainder of the evening, collecting 70 yards on 21 carries.

San Francisco 49ers fans will get to see some of the offensive weapons on display Saturday night when Frank Gore, Brian Westbrook and Michael Crabtree are expected to be on the field against the Oakland Raiders. None of these players have seen the field so far this pre-season and it will be fun to see what the offense looks like with these playmakers in the lineup. The only weapon which will be missing is TE Vernon Davis who is nursing a sore knee.

According to 49ers head coach Mike Singletary, Gore will see about a series or two of action with the first unit offensive line playing the entire first half. Singletary didn’t mention the length of playing time Michael Crabtree or Brian Westbrook would see.

RB Frank Gore likely does not need to see much action in pre-season, but he did express his desire to play a few series in live action game conditions with his rebuilt offensive line earlier this week to reporters.

San Francisco 49ers fan might get a chance to see RB Frank Gore this weekend when the Niners square off against the Oakland Raiders. There has been nothing physically wrong with Gore this pre-season but he has been held out this pre-season as the Niners try to solidify a rebuilt offensive line which features several rookie and young players.

49ers head coach Mike Singletary told reporters yesterday that fans could see Gore in the lineup this weekend. “It’s possible. I think it comes down to timing. When you have a very good runner, you want to be careful. But at the same time, you don’t want to limit him too much”.

That is a problem that coaches face every pre-season with premiere running backs. How much workload is required in pre-season. Backs don’t need to get the reps that a position such as quarterback require to get their timing down.

Gore told reporters though, that he would like to get some live action though to get a sense of how he’ll be able to run behind his new offensive line. “I’m a player, so I’d like to play. I’ve been practicing hard, but there’s nothing like the game. I just want to get that first hit, that first contact to the ground, and after that, it’ll be a go-go for me”, Gore told reporters.
