San Francisco 49er’s looking at Trent Edwards
[picappgallerysingle id="9748294"]
Reports have surfaced this afternoon that the San Francisco 49er’s are seriously looking at claiming former Buffalo Bills QB Trent Edwards off waivers. Jason LaCanfora of NFL.com is reporting via Twitter that the 49er’s are considering bringing in the former Stanford quarterback to give Alex Smith some competition.
It was reported yesterday after the Buffalo Bills released Trent Edwards, that the Bills had been trying to move the quarterback in the offseason but there was little interest from other teams. Buffalo must have decided that Ryan Fitzpatrick was the direction they wanted to go forward in the season with after Fitzgerald finally jump started the Bills offense against the New England Patriots this past Sunday.
Edwards started two games for the Bills this season and was unimpressive in both games, passing for only 241 yards and was sacked 7 times. Edwards has had a lackluster career in Buffalo, and was often unjured or benched. His best season came in 2008 when he started 14 games throwing for 2699 yards, 10 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
If the Niners were to claim Edwards, there is no way they would carry 4 quarterbacks and either Troy Smith or David Carr would have to be released.
Something needs to be done to jump start Smith and his performance on the field. While Smith has completed over 60% of his passes, he has been sacked 7 times and thrown 5 interceptions against only 2 touchdowns.
San Francisco 49er’s fire OC Jimmy Raye

Despite Mike Singletary reportedly giving him a vote of confidence, the San Francisco 49er’s have reportedly fired Offensive Coordinator Jimmy Raye. According to NFL.com’s Jason LaCanfora on Twitter, the Niners have indeed fired Jimmy Raye.
After the Niner’s were beat down by the Kansas City Chiefs last night, head coach Mike Singletary told the media, “We all have a hand in this, whether it’s play calling or execution. We all could’ve done better”.
Raye was named in a Yahoo!Sports column two weeks ago as being possibly the weak link in the Niners offense as the timing of the plays was called into question along with the actual play calling itself.
San Francisco now finds itself in a precarious position as they are 0-3 in the division, now two games behind Seattle and Arizona and a 3,000 mile road trip to Atlanta to face the 2-1 Atlanta Falcons awaits and the team has no offensive coordinator. The wheels are most definitely falling off the bus for Mike Singletary and his team, such a disappointment after such high expectations heading into this season.
Mike Singletary wants wins not moral victories

The San Francisco 49er’s season hasn’t started exactly the way Mike Singletary envisioned and he says he wants wins not moral victories. Last week Mike Singletary got into a terse discussion with a local television reporter, Dennis O’Donnell. The video of the reporters segment called “Coaches Corner” went viral on the internet, as it portrayed Singletary irate over tough questions the reporter asked regarding the San Francisco 49er’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Singletary apparently put his foot down and the reporter has been replaced.
Yesterday, Singletary was a guest on KNBR radio with Murph and Mac to discuss the current state of the Niners and whether or not they can rebound. Singletary has been about as stable as a vial of nitroglycerin lately, so any interview he gives can provide great entertainment value. You can listen to entire interview right here.
Singletary was asked if the Niners recroded a moral victory with the close loss the the reigning Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints on Monday night.
Singletary responded, “No. Moral victory is something that we really don’t use around here. It’s something that we went into the game not wanting to come out of the game saying”. Singletary also commented on the Niners 0-2 start saying that the Niners are only one game out of the division lead.
I agree with Singletary, the Niners do not need to be focusing on moral victories, but rather finding a way to make it into the win column this week on the road against the Kansas City Chiefs who are a surprising 2-0.
Does San Francisco recover from 0-2?
[picappgallerysingle id="9821541"]
You knew it was going to be inevitable after the week the San Francisco 49er’s had, but can the San Francisco 49er’s rebound from an 0-2 start after last night’s defeat against the New Orleans Saints? Next up for the 49er’s is a road game against the upstart 2-0 Kansas City Chiefs.
The San Francisco 49er’s showed improvement last night. They got RB Frank Gore going, Alex Smith had a better game, yes he had 2 interceptions, but one was a deflection off Michael Crabtree. So, the Niners are 0-2, is it time to panic yet?
I don’t think so. San Francisco has four favorable matchups in their next 5 games, the only one I question is the October 3rd game against the Atlanta Falcons which displayed some firepower this past weekend. San Francisco significantly outgained the Saints last night, but once again turnovers did them in. You cannot turn the ball over 4 times to the reigning Super Bowl Champions and expect to come out a winner.
This week will be a crossroads for this team this season. Whether or not they can regroup and go on the road a defeat the Chiefs is the task at hand. If San Francisco can regroup and get a win this week, I believe they could be 5-3 at their bye week and in good position. I hate to say at week three the team is a the crossroads of a must win game, but folks, that is where we are. This is a must win game this week.If the Niner’s lose this week, Mike Singletary’s name might start to be mentioned of those coaches on the hot seat.
Are the wheels falling off the San Francisco 49ers?
[picappgallerysingle id="9645748"]
What a week it’s been for the San Francisco 49er’s, are the wheels starting to fall off the team? It has been a bizarre week, one that started right after the shocking blowout in Seattle with head coach Mike Singletary thanking Seattle Seahawks head coach for the beatdown the San Francisco 49er’s received. Thank you sir, may I have another?
Then mid-week, Jason Cole from Yahoo! Sports wrote a piece about problems within the 49er’s coaching ranks which led to problems with getting the plays in to QB Alex Smith in a timely matter. The article suggested that offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye might be the problem and the situation could cause issues between Raye and Singletary.
Singletary is now upset that the story got out there in the media. Yesterday, Singletary was a guest on KPIX television and became very agitated when he was asked about the Yahoo report. You can watch the interview right here. At one point Singletary went all Drew Rosenhaus-Terrell Owens “next question” and I almost expected him to drop to the floor and start doing push-ups.
And then yesterday, LB Ahmad Brooks returned to practice after being out with a lacerated kidney and he and Shantae Spencer got into a dust up during drills.
These are moments which will define a team, it’s how the team responds that will define their season. There is obviously frustration surrounding the organization after being embarrassed the way they were blown out in Seattle. If there is in face an issue with Jimmy Raye, then obviously that was a matter that Singletary would like to have kept in house and dealt with it in his own fashion. But the cat is out of the bag, the story is out there, the team just has to deal with it now.
This is a team which entered the 2010 season with high expectations and the 49er’s don’t need more distractions. Everyone needs to be on the same page. The Niners need to return to their style of football. They need more Gore and less Smith. Alex Smith does not need to be putting the ball up 45 times a game. He needs to be more of a game manager than a gunslinger. It will be interesting to watch how the Niners respond on Monday night. If they lay another egg and get blown out by the New Orleans Saints, it will be a very tough week in San Francisco next week.
